Dog’s show pack-behaviour by nature, and the raising and training-instruction used in this book is based upon this fact. The natural behaviour of the dog is the starting-point for all the lessons that will be covered. This ensures that this particular method is suitable for any dog, whatever the age of the animal.

In nine clear lessons, explained with many instruction photos, techniques are taught along the lines of a training schedule in order to make unwanted behaviour of the dog manageable and to stimulate desirable behaviour. This is all based upon the increasingly valued Roedel Method, which is based upon natural canine behaviour.

The instructions are given in such a way that anyone can raise and train their dog independently, with permanent results, without violating the natural behaviour and character of the dog. An indispensable book for any dog owner!

Preface
Even in early history our anchesters were raising animals. Already at that time dogs became quite soon a working and pet companion. Humans and dogs are a ‘evolutionary life’ going around together. Despite this mutual history it appears that humans and dogs have been growing apart. In daily life we can see that humans and dogs are having problems to understanding each others language. We can recognize this in streets and in the parks, where dogs lead their owners, instead of the other way around.
As vets we are confronted with dogs with behavioural problems and irreverent behaviour in our clinic.
Talking to the owners, it soon comes clear that dog behaviour is compared to human behaviour. The owners are unaware that this is a mistake. People often don’t know, that humans and dogs, with on first sight very simular gestures, mean subtantially different things.
Of course there have been written bookshelves full of books on dogs and their behaviour. What makes the book of Arjen van Alphen and Francien Koeman. of Dog Education Institute De Roedel so fascinating and unique? The answer to that is the unevitable dog friendly approach they have developped. From their pedagogical education and many years of excerience they enriched their knowledge with an innovating merge of ethological and scientific insights of
developmental psychologist Vygotsky en de leaning psychologist Leontjew.
In the approximation of Arjen van Alphen and Francien Koeman the play for ranking between owner and his dog is central and the own value and being of a dog is not affected.
Out of a basic knowledge of play for ranking in the pack it is clearly undstood how puppys in a litter learn the rules of this play from their doggy parents. In a playful way the puppies learn the different roles, codes and their place in the ranking.
If the owner understands and handles accordingly to these same rules and codes, this is an ideal starting point for the mutual understanding between owner and dog.
As a result the dog will fulfill it’s owners demands with pleasure without beeing forced/drilled which will lead to a more pleasant doglife and ownership as well.
I wish all owners enjoyable reading, and owners and dogs lots of pleasure practising this fantastic and unique method.

Biblion review, Editorial
By their experience training dogs, the authors have developed a method that aims to create the relationship between the (higher ranked) owner and his (lower ranked) dog, in way that is natural to the dog because it is based on the dog’s point of view.

Clearly explained is why ranking is very important in raising a dog. The first three chapters are about development from pup to adult dog, and why the first 17 weeks after birth are so important, for the consequences and learning behaviour. It is tuned to the difficulties in communication between humans and dogs, as humans are mostly verbal and dogs are mostly non-verbal

The next two chapters are about practising with the dog. Doing this, it’s important not to forget; dogs will repeat behaviour that is rewarded. Exercises described are; heelwork, play, to open the dog’s mouth as well as some subtle exercises in dominance. Furthermore it is explained, how to evaluate the exercises and in this way train your dog at your own individual speed.

A great book, because the theories are explained very well as are the practical exercises. With black and white photos and coloured photos in various sizes.

Introduction for the third edition, may 2007
When we wrote the book about the Roedel Method, our goal was to create a book that was both theoretical and practical. It would focus on the practice, supported by the theory which would insure a better understanding of the dog language and the dogs’ perspective.
The book was to be especially recognisable, identifiable and measurable for any dog owner or lover. Keeping this goal in mind, we made choices. Thus, when writing about the learning processes, we limited what we wrote to the known stages of development of the puppy, with a number of behavioural implications. We also chose to address the practical aspects in particular when describing the meaning and the goal of following, marking, scent and body language.

What we have consciously left out is the important social learning. How does a pup learn the dogs (scent and body) language and communication? How does he learn what scent and body language has a meaning, and what that meaning is? How does a pup develop into an highly social and communicative being and…how can us humans respond to this and use this knowledge to improve our relationship with our dog?
Because social learning is very extensive and of great importance to dogs, we have decided to describe this in a more extensive manner, in a separate book: Part II on the Roedel Method.
In this book, the learning processes, following, marking and the scent and body language are all covered extensively, and even more important…what all this in scent and body language means for our dog.
Thanks to the second part about the Roedel Method, the third edition of Part I can remain unrevised and our goals for the theory and practice used in the first book are maintained.
The fact that we felt the need for a third edition of the first part indicated that we have succeeded in our objective. For the interested reader who wants to learn to understand his dog better and who wants to obtain more insight in the background of the Roedel Method, Part II is definitely a welcome addition to the first part!

The perspective of our dog is dog-language that consists of scent language, body language and a combination of those two. Humans are more visual and verbal. Scent and body language are unknown ‘language’ aspects for us. Because of this, we watch the dog language almost insurmountably from our human perspective and the doggish ‘language’ aspects are hardly seen in the daily practice of dog education methods. By taking a closer look at the dogs’ perspective, in its social leaning, its scent and body language, we are able to prevent miscommunication and understand and ‘speak’ the language of our dogs!

Each dog-lover is convinced that the early life of the pup in the litter is incredibly important. This is where it learns the principles of the dog language; social learning. However, this is the first book in which the dogs’ social learning is extensively described. An indispensable book for every dog owner, about what a dog learns, and more importantly…what meanings these things have in its own dog language.

Step by step, accompanied by recognisable examples from practice, you will be taken along to experience the perspective and the own language of your dog, both theoretically and in practice. For each dog owner, because social learning begins directly after birth, but…it goes on throughout the dog’s entire life!

Preface
The long expected Part 2 sustains the educational method as discribed in the book Part 1.
The dedication that characterizes the authors in their individual accompaniment to both owner and dog is displayed in this book through their precise clarification of learning mechanisms of dogs, of its body language, of the interaction between scent language and body language and of the concepts of dominance and ranking.
The authors powers in their observational ability, their tenacity and scientific adjustment. With lots of patience they have used their observational abilities over many years to observe their own litters and those of others. Their scientific adjustment shows in the great amount of scientific texts they have acquiried to understand dogs better, as well as their own scientific research.
Their claims in mapping dog’s body language are both imposing and impressive and require to ‘walk on dog’s shoes’. The cooperation between body and scent language as stated in The Rule of Three give us humans with our moderate noses the opportunity to understand dogs reactions, even though we ourselves smell nothing particular.
The authors succeed in giving insights on a dog’s World experience for all dog lovers and dog trainers. The examples are easily recognizable and show the reader that making interpretations too quickly can lead to totally mistaken conclusions.
Time after time they confront the reader with anthropomophic explanations of dog behaviour.
A careful analysis based on observable behaviour often gives the reader an awareness of interpretating based on the World experiences of dogs.

On a personal note I would like to thank both authors for all the scientific discussions we have had about dog behaviour and how hypothesis in this field can be tested by means of scientific research. After all, the fantastic realtionship I have with my Appenzell male Arthos was established thanks to their accompaniment.

NBD|Biblion recensie, Winy van Gils: Book Part 2
A not very common book about dog raising. The role of the mother dog is the perspective of this book. By imitating the mother dogs behaviour, humans have a clearer insight into the language of dogs and puppys.
The reason things tend to go wrong, the anthropomorphism of dog owners, creates miscommunication between the owner and his dog.
Things addressed are; a ‘self assured’ attitude the owner needs to display towards his dog, packs and ranking, how dogs learn and everything else needed to raise a dog into a trustworthy companion.
This book helps to improve communication in the relationship between owner and dog and by that can prevent dog bites.

It sometimes takes some puzzling in order to find the practical information between the theoretical issues. That’s the only little downside of this book. With lots of pictures in colour, list of literature and a register.
